Made it to Cali!

Hello,

The trip has been exciting so far. I have seen a bunch of things along the way. I have driven 5,028 miles through 13 states finally making it to my destination in San Diego, California. I will be staying until Monday 11/16/2015 and heading back to New Jersey. I am currently plotting my journey with a different route.  The challenge to drive across the country only using fares earned by ride sharing had a few obstacles. Some of states didn’t allow ride sharing, and some didn’t let me logon to my app. I could have done better research to find hot spots to drive/ spots not allowing driving. So far I have spent an estimated $264.34 of my original $500 funding ( click here for more details). Places I have visited over the week:

New Orleans: cool area, with some good food. Bourbon street had fun live music and street performers.

Austin Texas: There was a fun fun fun concert going on during my stay and the city was packed. I definitely want to go back for more then one day.

Grand Canyons: The grand canyons were amazing. I saw a bunch of  birds and different animals on my hike.

Sedona, Arizona: The roads driving down these canyons were awesome. The deep red color of these rocks were incredible. I enjoyed a nice view in the town with a coffee before catching the sunset and heading to California.

Cheers,

Edward

Great Timing

Hello,

So far, so great! I am amazed at how such a spontaneous trip turned into perfect timing in each area I have been visiting. Pittsburgh was my second stop in which there so happened to be a Pittsburgh Stealers game that Sunday. The Dry Falls water fall was another stop which just got a lot of rain the week before making for a nice site of the powerful waterfall and water below. My current location is Nashville, Tennessee (known for its music) is having the 49th annual Country Music Awards in the city!

I visited Chattanooga, TN on my way to Nashville yesterday and was happy with the sites I saw. The Lookout mountain had a great view of 7 states, and the Ruby Falls was cool. The Lyft app is letting me drive again so I can earn some money before tonight. I planned on walking around the city and checking out the nightlife when the awards are over. So far the people here are really nice and have great accents.  I will be leaving at 5 am tomorrow morning for my next stop is New Orleans! I will update the “trip tracker” once I arrive tomorrow.

Cheers,

Edward

Trip Update

Hello,

I had originally planned to drive for Uber in every city earning enough money to get me to my next destination/city. I started in Belmar earning $188.63 on Halloween and drove straight to a rest stop near the Appalachian Mountains, PA. The nuber errorext morning, I drove to Pittsburgh, PA and arrived around 10:30a.m.  I turned my Uber app on it gave me a notification that I could not drive there. (I could have done more research other than reading the contract). I thought of quick solutions to my ultimate challenge.  I had Lyft, a similar app to Uber, on my phone but never actually drove for them before. I logged in and saw that it worked so I drove tlyft errorhe day to earned $120. My original impression of Pittsburgh wasn’t great and I wanted to leave early into my arrival. After driving around the city and checking out the major sites to see, it turned out to be a great city. The architecture was amazing, and I loved driving up and down the crazy vertical roads and bridges. There was also a Pittsburgh Stealers game at 1:00pm which I gave a couple a ride to. The energy from the fans and the stadium was awesome. I also checked out Mount Washington lookout which had unreal views of the entire city and bridges. After earning an adequate amount of fares I drove to West Virginia and stayed in a hotel to get some rest. I checked to see if my Lyft account was working in West Virginia this morning and noticed it also gave me a similar error which confused me why I could drive in PA but not WV.  I emailed both companies to see if they can temporarily let me drive in Nashville, TN upon my arrival. Today I checked out the New River Gorge Bridge in WV which I drove over last night and could hardly see 5 feet ahead of me with the fog. The views were awesome and they had nice relaxing spots to just sit down and enjoy life. I am currently off to Highlands, NC to visit a waterfall in the morning and Nashville, TN after that. I will start planning on how to keep this challenge to break even on a road trip to Cali on my next drive. A buddy recommended I make Pizza’s in California, so I might be walking into pizzerias on my way looking for day to day work?

Cheers,

Edward

Road trip destinations planned

Hello,
Below is the list of some of the destinations I have planned for my Uber road trip. These destinations may change depending on where the Uber driving takes me but it provides a good starting point. I created the list by printing out a map of the USA, plotted addresses of destinations I wanted to visit, and found some other destinations on my current routes using trip advisor If you have any recommendations, please feel free to comment below. Depending on the progress I am making, I will be adding new destinations. My goal is to make it back to New Jersey before Thanksgiving so this gives me almost 20 days of travel. Only 2 more days before the journey starts!

1. Andy Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh, PA)
2. New River Gorge Preserve (Glen Jean, WV)
3. Dry Falls (Highlands, North Carolina)
4. Nashville, Tennessee
5. Vicksburg National Military Park (Vicksburg, MS)

First road trip set for Halloween October 31, 2015

presents “The Uber Road Trip” with Ed

Hello,

I will be starting the official Uber Road Trip on October 31, 2015 (Halloween). The trip will start in New Jersey and end in California. I will have a $500.00 fund which will be used to get the trip started. Once I hit the road I will have to earn enough Uber fares to pay for my gas, food, and housing. The Uber earnings are paid on Wednesdays so I will have to time my trips and spending accordingly to sustain a positive bank balance.

Here are a few rules I had in mind:

  1. I can only Airbnb my housing.
  2. I can not eat/drink anything from a corporate chain (Dunkin Donuts etc.)

Follow my trip on Instagram: theuberroadtrip #theuberroadtrip

Cheers,
Edward
